RMD – Didgeridoos by Roger Mühlemann
Roger has been captivated by the didgeridoo since 2018, and the instrument has since become a significant part of his leisure time. During this period, he has not only learned the art of crafting didgeridoos but also developed a deep appreciation for the cultural significance and musical properties of this unique instrument. He is probably one of the last wooden didgeridoo makers in Switzerland, making his work particularly valuable and unique.
In his spare time, Roger enjoys working with his hands to find a balance to his job. He sees didgeridoo crafting not only as a hobby but as a form of creative expression. His passion drives him to explore new techniques and refine his skills continually. Roger has taught himself the craft of didgeridoo making, highlighting his dedication and commitment.
Roger creates his didgeridoos using the sandwich technique from native woods. This method allows for the optimization of the instrument’s sound properties by bonding two layers of wood together. Each layer is carefully selected to enhance the acoustic qualities.
The didgeridoos are sealed inside and out with a food-safe lacquer, ensuring that the instruments do not require oiling. This lacquer not only protects the wood but also provides a long-lasting and attractive finish.
One to three times a year, a lovingly and passionately crafted high-quality instrument leaves his workshop. Each didgeridoo is meticulously checked for sound quality and craftsmanship before receiving its final touch. Roger invests a lot of time and effort into every instrument to ensure that it is not only aesthetically pleasing but also musically of the highest quality.
Roger’s commitment to didgeridoo making is reflected in each of his instruments. With a combination of craftsmanship skills, a deep understanding of materials, and a passion for music, he creates didgeridoos that offer both sound and beauty. Each of his instruments tells a story and brings the rich tradition and cultural heritage of the didgeridoo into the modern music world.
